11.10 Panic when safely removing external ntfs drive

I'm running 11.10 and getting my system freezing when safely removing my external hard drive with "panic occurred, switching back to text console." and the caps lock light flashing on my laptop (at which point I need to hard reset). I've seen https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/844957 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/793796 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/867811

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/868628

I'm not quite sure what to do from here. I wasn't having this issue until I uninstalled the games that came with 11.10 through the software centre. Seems like the only thing that changed before the error started occurring. I'm still new to ubuntu, so I apologise if asking about this is inappropriate when there are bug reports. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

http://people.canonical.com/~ogasawara/lp844957/ contains test kernels but I'm not quite sure how to use them, or if I should. The thread at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...ux/+bug/844957 also mentions that stable patches have been queued for the first Oneiric SRU release. Does this mean that there will be an update to resolve this issue?

When the tracking bug shows "Fix Released" then the new packages will be available in an update, hasn't happened yet.

Atm they are still in oneiric-proposed (main)
So you can either wait till then & use 'unmount' instead or install the new packages from proposed.

If enabling the proposed repo one generally shouldn't just update all, better to only use to update specific packages & then disable the repo if not doing updates/upgrades on an individual basis

Packages go to proposed for testing and can't always be presumed to be 'good'

The current set in proposed that you'd want are these 3 -
    linux-headers-3.0.0-13 (3.0.0-13.21)
    linux-headers-3.0.0-13-generic (3.0.0-13.21)
    linux-image-3.0.0-13-generic (3.0.0-13.21)
These updates are also available but not necessary though are fine to install
    linux-tools-3.0.0-13 (3.0.0-13.21)
    linux-tools-common (3.0.0-13.21)
    linux-libc-dev ( 3.0.0-13.21)
If not clear on using proposed you should ask or as mentioned just wait, should show up normally in the next couple of weeks

Thank you. I was unsure about how to install, but then came across your post in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1778373&page=4 which gave simple, clear instructions, so a double thank you. It's all resolved ^_^

I do have a quick footnote concern. Will updates install normally still after installing these .debs before they have been officially released?
