HORRIBLE 11.10 battery life - fix anytime soon?

FYI, this significantly decreased power draw on my i3 based laptop.

My current draw went from ~1500mA to ~800mA with the following kernel options

change
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
To
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i915.i915_enable_rc6=1 i915.i915_enable_fbc=1 i915.lvds_downclock=1"

then sudo update-grub

The one that made the majority (nearly all) of the difference was the first.

Also add:

pcie_aspm=force

to your grub kernel options.

pcie_aspm=force added to my grub boot menu is what netted me the largest gain. I am running an i5 with intel graphics and kernel 3.1.4. I am going to try a 3.2 kernel later on to see if there is any difference. The other options (i915.i915_enable***, etc.) provided about the same increase in battery life as powertop. Phoronix has a really good article about these and about the different kernels.

You may want to try the 3.2 ubuntu kernel (It has the ASPM fix already backported into it). For Oneiric there is a PPA with 3.2 RC7 from Precise already backported for Oneiric if don't want to compile on your own. The final 3.2 kernel should be out shortly and the PPA will be updated. This is the kernel that PP will be shipping with.

There is the kernel 3.2 RC option....for the ones who dare to do it.

I installed kernel 3.2.0-999 on my Lenovo G570 and so far I have noticed that the fan runs more quietly and that battery life appears to be much better. I have not had any crashes or compatibility issues with this kernel.

I had the exact same problem as fictivetoast (though I have a dell vostro v131). I edited grub as you were suggesting, and everything seems fine, but I was wondering what kind of problems this may cause, so that I can keep an eye on them. For example, is it possible that this fix cause a slight overheating? I didn't check cpus and hdd temperatures before changing grub, but now using lm-sensors I saw the cpus stay between 47°C and 51°C and hdd around 40°C. Is it normal?

hello! i'm not a professional ubuntu user, i have a dell latitude E5420 i5. ubuntu battery life is quite lower than on windows 7. how can i add "those additional parameters to my grub conf"??
