    Red face Ubuntu appearance

Hi, I am running Ubuntu in a VM. I notice that the appearance of the desktop, terminal and icons sometimes change. E.g. The terminal will sometimes be black with white text while at other times, it is white with black text.
Why is this so? Is there a way to set it to one appearance?

open terminal, EDIT, Profile Prefeneces, colors tab.

sometimes the system theme picks the colors, set it to custom and it wont change.
