Wink emu10k1 5.1 sound solved in kubuntu

The recent 'upgrade' in Kubuntu 11.10 broke my sound system, (was working at freshly installed 11.10, no sound at 11.10 + suggested package upgrades).

I FINALLY figured out that I could boot into a Ubuntu install, look at the AlsaMixer settings that work for six speaker audio, and then boot back into Kubuntu and use those settings (53 of them!). This worked and I now have six speaker audio (not sure if it is decoding 5.1) and it sounds good. It seems the recent Kubuntu alsa upgrades attempted to configure my mixer and failed for the emu10k1 / E-MU 1616m external dock combination. Below I show the alsamixer settings that work for my system (under Ubuntu 11.10 or Kubuntu 11.10)

    Good Luck!

Re: emu10k1 5.1 sound solved in kubuntu

    straight kubuntu, no other desktops.

i have a nvidia card, gtx 460, seems that hdmi on that card overrides on board IEC958.

i solved this by making a profile change, check image below.

also had another problem with IEC958, but it was actually fault of my receiver/ amplifier, either turning it of and on, or switching the function setting to another, and back again restored sound.

    thanks for sharing greg.

I'm having the same problem in a Dell XPS 15, with an nVidia GT435M. I also came to the same conclusion as inobe mentions, being able to use the media controls for sound. The problem is that when you connect the headphones in any of the 2 jacks, you still get sound, but the controls stop working. I hope the kubuntu team get a fix soon.
