    Thanks for confirming on Lauchpad.

And thank you for the info on Ubuntu-bug. It's not broken for me - I've just tried running the command. I've never used it before, that's all. I generally find that the bugs I've experienced are already reported so confirming on the web interface is enough.

Well, basically the command also starts up, and starts collecting data, but fails when getting to the point feeding this into Firefox.
But that's unrelated to this bug, so let's focus on the xserver issues.

Same problem her but unfortunately I'm a complete noob to Ubuntu and reverting to the older versions does not come easy. I've gone to Synaptic and located x-server common and x-server-xorg-core, I then get 3 versions of each file to install:

    2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.8 (lucid-updates)
    2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7 (lucid)
    2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7~xup2 (lucid)

Reverting to any of these does not seem to fix my problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm running 10.04 amd64 version.

I managed to revert my VirtualBox installation so graphics effects are now enabled as before (back to version 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6).

But my desktop machine does not work as expected.
Trying to enable the graphics effects the screen freezes (graphics are all scrambled).

    What should I do?

I recently reinstalled the machine so I am not happy about reinstalling again. Especially not due to some faulty update from Canonical .

How do you know what the problem is?

Re: Lucid Lynx GLX broken after xserver-common and xserver-xorg-core update

On my VirtualBox installation I had the possibility to select 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.6 from the drop down list.
Selecting that and reverting and then locking to that version solved that problem.
Restarting the machine enabled the desktop effects without me doing anything specific.

Om my desktop machine that option was not available for some reason.
I manually installed the deb-packages and went through the same procedure as for the VirualBox installation but that did not help.
Trying to select enable the desktop effects made the screen scrambled.

OK, it looks like new, fixed packages are on the way:
    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...05/comments/20

It's no longer necessary to "Lock" the forced version of the packages if you've downgraded.

All things considered, this certainly was a speedy response by the developers, I think. Thank you to everyone who helped draw attention to the bug!

But how I fix the scrambled graphics when enabling desktop effects?
I guess updated packages wont solve that problem?

I don't know that the new packages won't fix the problem...

Since the packages are building now, according to the bug, if it were me I'd just wait and install them when available, to see whether they will work for the desktop machine.

    I looked at /etc/X11.
There is no xorg.conf. Is that how it should be?
    Or has it been removed?

Yes, I believe that it is no longer necessary to have an xorg.conf.
