I just stuck with the Radeon/Gallium drivers and I've had no issues with Gnome Shell.
Ok, I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and I installed gnome-shell using the instructions here:
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...TI.27s_site.29
Everything seems to be working just fine except that when I drag a window the windows are little bit overly flashy and there is an above average delay if you know what I mean.
When I run the "fgl_glxgears" command the terminal spat out "11407 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2281.400 FPS" Does that mean my drivers are working good?

d3ngar: Thanks for the warning. Did you get GNOME SHELL working in any other way, not mentioned here?
I have no idea why this post came up here now... Ubuntu forums is giving me a hard time!
Well, it sort of works. I just have this horrible graphic bug.
The window overview works fine. The top bar is broken. Some Gnome-Shell strings display fine, but others are blurred. Will attach some screenshots.
On occasion I also see what looks like a Unity-like top navigation bar.
Watch this space....

(also Ubuntu One is kinda slow to sync)
I then saw that this is an open bug

Okay, I also tried the drivers from the and website. 11.9, as recommended.
Unfortunately this also meant that absolutely no graphics were displayed and I again had to use the recovery mode to install the native fglrx packages.
The graphic bugs are very bad and the I don't want to use Unity...
Same problem here!
I'm using Unity (I kinda like it ) until a real fix is out. Don't wanna mess it all just because of Gnome... =P
