How to Remove Unity Top/Title Bar

I've tried doing searches on the subject but maybe I'm typing my search wrong.

I like the unity bar, and although it's stuck on the left side (instead of the bottom where I'd prefer it), I'd like to start using it.

Problem is it integrates the menu bar for whatever program/window I'm in to the top bar along with the minimize, maximize, close buttons. Apple had this and I hated it! I could never get used to it. Is there any way to move the menu away from the top bar and back in place where it's "supposed" to be (like Ubuntu Classic mode). How this makes sense.

PS What's with the lack of customization available for Unity?? I thought Ubuntu was open source and didn't try to force it's will on us like Windows and Mac do whenever they feel like making design changes. It shouldn't be too hard to move the bar, get rid of the workplace switcher icon (without killing expo), move icons, etc. Unity is very restrictive imo.

Rambling is not too productive. No-one is forcing you to use Unity. By default, you have a classical gnome session with desktop effects, and one without desktop effects. Also in Ubuntu 11.10, there will be a Gnome classic session, albeit somewhat different and not supporting all old applets because it is build on the new gnome 3 environment.

With commercial OS'es, you get what you paid for. No choice. With Ubuntu, you always have the choise, even if the default the distro chooses does not anymore fit your preference.

Thanks for the link. I'm in Ubuntu Classic right now, but I'll give it a shot once I'm done working on this project.

I love Ubuntu and ever since I started using it last year instead of Windows7, I couldn't go back. It's definitely superior to both Mac and Win for my purposes (website and graphics designer). I'm just shocked how Unity seems so clunky to customize because everything else (Gnome, KDE, and everything else linux) is so easy and open. I know it'll improve though.

The min/max/close buttons are there only for you maximized applications. For these, the top bar functions also as the title bar. It provides you more screen estate when maximizing windows. I do not think this can be easily changed when you use Unity.
