How about something based on either Lubuntu or Xubuntu?

And now I bend the knee of my heart,
Imploring you for your kindness.
switched to xubuntu after this last launch. It was a choice between mint, xubuntu and lubuntu - and it was Xubuntu as xfce is similar to gnome 2.x's "normal" interface, all my gnome programs are compatible (+all ppa's work), it's actively maintained/developed and very customizable + faster than any ubuntu I ever used.
I voted "other" because there is no best. Only what's best for you.
I personally, enjoy using them all, and can be productive in them all. When a new DE comes out, I just roll up my sleeves, learn it, and get used to it. The more time I spend complaining and worrying, the less time I have to learn and enjoy.
