external drive not spinning down with computer shutdown

I replaced my old 2TB Western Digital MyBook external hard drive with a MyBook Essential 3TB on an Asrock atom system (Ubuntu 10.04).

The old drive powered down when the computer shut down.
Now, it still enters sleep mode after some minutes, but when I shut down my PC that process makes it become active again and afterwards it doesn't power down.

It only powers down when I manually choose to safely remove it, and then turn the system off.

(Also, the old drive was NTFS, this one is ext4, but I don't think that could be an issue.)

    Any ideas?
