Strange artifacts obscuring my status bar

I posted a question to askubuntu just so I could try it out, but my question didn't get very much attention.

Basically I have all this glitchy stuff in the top right of my screen that I can't seem to do anything about. It randomly went away yesterday, but then it came back after I had to fix my network connections. Very strange. I have no idea how to even find the source of such a glitch. Anyone know what could be going on?

It appears to be graphics card related. Are you using the default graphics driver or a proprietary driver from software sources > additional drivers (12.10) or additional drivers (12.04)?

Is FGLRX proprietary? I don't think I have that one installed. Should I get that one or the one that has "updates" in the package name?
