    Thank you guys!

I got my old HP5850 working thru the USB, thanks to you. Now maybe I'll try getting it going thru the RJ45 connected to an extra WiFi router. A few more days and I'll be totally free of XP.

Seems like a knowledgeable bunch. Could one of you take a look at my related post on xsane io error with hplip (printing is working, scanner is recognized, but constant io errors)?

I am a real newbie here so bear with me. I have sucessfully installed (I think) my networked HP LAserjet 4 Plus, but even after changing the paper size to US Letter in both places in the printer properties, it still askes for A4 paper.

Run hp-toolbox and verify that the paper size is correct under print settings. Then also make sure your paper size is correct in the application. Also make sure that the document is not formated for A4, ie sometimes people will make pdf's that are A4 size rather than Letter.

    Hope this helps.

if there is some error while trying to open HP toolbox, just install this package: python-qt4 (I think that is the right package)

if hp toolbox does not appear under the system > administration, then it is probably not enabled.

just right click on system, and go to edit menus, you'll figure it out.

I have an HP6800 and am having a devil of a time installing it.

I do not have "administration" under System in my application menu (I'm running Xubuntu). Where else would I look? I've poked around and I see nothing obvious.

Hmmm, I really don't know where the printing preferences are in xubuntu, though I imagine there should be one somewhere. I would advise you to just look again (thoroughly), or else I don't really know what to tell you

    Xubuntu's printer setup's at Settings>Printing.

HP's toolbox doesn't appear on my xubuntu menu but the Debian Menu will find it if you install it, or you can use the command "hp-toolbox".

That said, printing certainly seems to be one area where Linux can get to you a bit...
