upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04 caused a big drop in performance

I've got an ATT radeon 1950 graphics card and have been using the lts 10.04 Ubuntu until yesterday. Someone suggested OpenGL support was much better for this card so last night I did the two distribution upgrades in a row. After the first, to 10.9 was very impressed. Glxinfo said I was now using direct rendering and the fibreoptic lamp screensaver was very smooth (not exactly an evidence based benchmark) upgrading to 11.04 seems to have undone that and it's got a really low fps again. I'm using the classic look. 'Top' says that xorg is using up a lot of the processor when the lamp is on?

Any ideas or should I have just gone for a clean install?

Did you log into "Classic Ubuntu, No Effects"? Those desktop effects could be the culprit, since they eat up a ton of graphics resources. Try running a game with them on and with them off and you'll see what I mean.

BTW, a clean install is ALWAYS the way to go.

It sounds like the 3D driver isn't installed correctly (note that direct rendering does not necessarily mean GPU/hardware acceleration for 3D). What is output of glxinfo?
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
    export LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose; glxinfo

mesa-utils were at the newest release according to apt-get and changing from classic to classic no effects didn't help.

i think the problem may be at the end there.

When I upgraded both times for some reason it installed a lot of nvidia stuff which caused a lot of problems and stoped any glx happening. I fixed that by using synaptic to remove anything with nvidia in.
Any suggestions from the out put above or shall I just go for a clean install?

I've done a clean install with 11.04 and am still having the same problem with the same glxinfo output. Don't quite know why when it was working well with 10.10

Try using the xorg-edgers PPA: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
