Re: GPU driver problem when booting

I tried to reinstall my nVidia driver and at some point, it says "The distribution-provided pre-install script failed!".

    So here's the log file:

I think it would also help to see the contents of "/var/log/nvidia-installer.log"
    Thanks.

Re: GPU driver problem when booting

I'm out of ideas at the moment, so please do what D0natell0 suggested. Also, have you tried booting in 'Safe graphics' mode (via grub 'recovery' menu)? Does it allow to boot into GUI or is same as normal booting?

It's the content of the log file that I put above!

    Thanks!

    Totally missed it !!

However, I couldn't find any hint there either. So please confirm how does safe graphics mode behave. AFAIK, it uses 'Driver=Vesa' mode, so nvidia shouldn't interfere.

Re: GPU driver problem when booting

just to be sure... you suggest that I boot in safe mode and check what happen... will I have any log file or feedbacks from that ?

I never had to boot in safe mode before with Ubuntu (with Windows... too much)!

Re: GPU driver problem when booting

You won't get any error-specific logs there. But if you can boot normally in that mode, it will be confirmed that the problem is nvidia driver-specific, and not gdm itself. A google recent search suggested that there may be many reasons for the error, and solutions may vary accordingly.

Re: GPU driver problem when booting

So, I download the new driver from nVidia, 285.05.09 and even with that one, I still have the same problem. The installation script failed and so on!

So, it's not a driver problem. Or it is, but something else makes the installation script fails. I don't know if it can be related to that package "nvidia-current" ?
