Cannot find correct keyboard layout! driving me nuts!

I recently changed keyboards and until today had only used it in windows. It is a UK standard en_gb keyboard

Booted into 10.10 today and lots of keys are not working, mainly the left shift key (the one next to it acts as a shift instead, meaning i have no backslash/pipe character) the hash key does not work either.

I found out after much hair pulling that ubuntu thinks the layout of my en_gb keyboard is different to what i actually have. i have only ever just selected United Kingdom for the keyboard type, never had any problems.

I attach some pictures to show what I mean.

    what ubuntu thinks i have:

try the US layout if that solves most of your issues. Otherwise i don't know another solution for this..

I am not sure but in some versions of ubuntu they have auto detection the software asks for some keys until the chose the right one, 11.04 has it but not sure if 10.04 has it.
I like unity, gnome and xfce

I have the actual layout you are using, but set to the one you have it set to and it works fine

I tried a ton of different things...models, layouts, was about to abandon it altogether when in desparation I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it back in, with Ubuntu running.

That did it....for now at least..

I feel a bit silly I didnt try that to begin with. I guess sometimes the right answer is the simplest..
