Wont startup

I turned on my computer and selected Ubuntu with Linux 2.6.38-8-generic and press enter, the screen goes black and my computer starts beeping

beside beeping what else happens? nothing... just back screen? or you have any error msg?
do you have a live cd you can boot your pc with?
did you change or moved partitions around previously?

when you boot from a live cd you have just a black screenn? no messages , nothing of nothing?

What happens if you press e before pressing enter in the grub menu and adding "nomodeset" (without quotes) to the end and then pressing enter?
