System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

I have Linux Mint 11 x64 installed, with all updates installed as well. I'm posting this here because I have the exact same issue with Ubuntu installed, and of course Mint is a very close Ubuntu relative. The solution should be the same in both cases...

When I plug in my external monitor to my laptop via HDMI, the system begins to "stutter" for about 50ms out of every second. When I say "stutter", I mean that the cursor freezes (even if you were moving it). This results in a very jerky experience. The problem goes away if I disconnect my HDMI external monitor.

Suggestions? Below are the contents of the report generated by running sysinfo:

To be honest, I gave up and switched back to Windows 7. Ever since I got this new laptop, I have had Linux hardware troubles. For instance, my laptop won't suspend either. Rather than take the time troubleshooting I decided to weep and come back to Linux after Sandy Bridge support improves...

Don't feel bad. I've bought bleeding-edge whitebooks from Taiwan before and I've had to wait a few months for the Linux Kernel to catch up.

That said, you might want to try a distro that provides the most up-to-date Kernel.

Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'm back to Ubuntu. As a workaround I can use VGA rather than HDMI, but I would like to solve this problem.

I actually grabbed the 3.0.3 kernel but it made no difference.

Does anyone have any idea why HDMI / mouse input would fight with one another to produce a stutter? May we please move this thread back to Ubuntu and out of Linux Mint, now that I am truly debugging the issue in Ubuntu?

    Hi,

    Same problem here.
Just driving crazy until figure it was HDMI that was causing this annoying micro freezes.
i'm using the same workaround, connecting by VGA.
Did you manage to solve the problem?

    Thnks

Nope, never did figure it out I used VGA for awhile instead, then eventually went back to Windows on my laptop.

Re: System Stutter When HDMI Monitor Is Connected

    Hi,

    Managed to solve the problem.
Did a bit of research and found out that i was using "nouveau" driver.
installed driver from nVidia and problem is now solved.

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 320M] (rev a2)
    Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 365c
    Kernel driver in use: nvidia
    Kernel modules: nvidia_current, nouveau, nvidiafb

    Thanks
    MN
