GIMP... lost my work with Control X

OK, so I am pretty new to GIMP. I was playing around with it today and wanted to undo something by pressing Control Z and pressed control X. All my work was lost!!! And the image i was working on went back to its original and I can't work with it anymore... i.s. I can't use the paint brush on it...

This has happened to me a few times and I was able to bring my work back by pressing undo. But now it wont return. But now it wont work!!!!! Please help!!!

control x is the cut command. if undo will not restore your pic, then just use the paste command to restore.

I think I may have done something else. I tried both suggestions to be avail. Also, i can't work on the image I see now. Also, when i was doing the original work the erase tool would just make the original visible again. maybe I did something weird with a layer or something?

This is because Anti Erase mode is on.
