Convert .m4v and .ogv Files to .avi

I have a bunch of video files stored in .m4v and .ogv file formats that I need converted to .avi. I've never really understood video transcoding, so I was wondering if anyone here could help me out.

Can anyone give me a CLI command that will transcode an .m4v or .ogv file into .avi? I don't need any fancy options or anything, just basic quality would be fine. I'd prefer a CLI command because I'm wanting to put it in a BASH script.

    Thanks for the help,
    Derrick

I just read all of this howto http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=766683 and it is a lot of help. There's not a command line command that I see, but WinFF is good enough at doing batch jobs, so I don't think I need one. Thanks anyone.
