Since directories encrypted with encryptfs are mounted as
virtual filesystems, many disk space monitoring tools will show the space of both the actual, encrypted files, and the mounted virtual filesystem. However only the encrypted files actually exist on your hard drive and take space there.
I'd agree with this assessment; there are a lot of threads where people get confused about reported disk space because they've got other disks and other partitions mounted. These add to the reported capacity and reported use; however, people tend not to notice the higher reported capacity. Everything in the filesystem is being counted - mounted disks included, because they are mounted inside the filesystem.
I try to treat the cause, not the symptom. I avoid the terminal in instructions, unless it's easier or necessary. My instructions will work within the Ubuntu system, instead of breaking or subverting it. Those are the three guarantees to the helpee.
