Question Make Terminal look like Unix terminal

    Hi there!

I remember reading that the Unix terminal had green text on black background. And, I thought I'd give my terminal that antiquey look.

Can anyone tell me exactly what numbers in the color settings would give me the 'Unix Green' since I personally have never seen a Unix terminal myself (Google isn't giving good pictures either)? I'm currently using
    Hue - 120
    Saturation - 100
    Value - 100
    Red - 0
    Green - 255
    Blue - 0
    Color - #00FF00
Can anyone suggest me the required values?

Sorry if my needs seem stupid. Just thought it would look cool.

    Cheers!

not all UNIX terminals are the same. and also back in the day screens may have been monochrome green which alot were those days which is why it looks that way.

how it looked would depend on the terminal you were accessing it from and depends on the UNIX variant such as System V or BSD etc.

Just find a setting you like

    This.

One of my earlier machines was not a Unix machine but it too was the classic monochromatic green on black setup. Ran a copy of Windows 1 on it. In other words, this is not really OS-specific.

Refine your search terms by taking Unix out of the string altogether. Try "monochromatic monitor prompt" or something like that.

Basically, any shade of green will be close. I'd go a little on the brighter side.

    Is THIS your card?

Also, the text was white on black, the screens were just coloured with an overlay if I remember correctly.

Life is an extraordinarily long concatenation of luck and coincidence.

My DEC terminal was amber, but if you really want retro go with teletype colors.

BTW, nothing stupid about it! Made me think of this Matrix-themed GNU/Linux setup: https://sites.google.com/site/shaunsite/matrix-wmii.png

Do you want this to apply to the system TTY's (when Xorg isn't running) or to a terminal emulator (i.e. gnome-terminal)? If it's the latter, and you're never going to be touching the TTY's, then it's very easy (it can be controlled by the application-level preferences). Otherwise, it will be difficult, though it is not impossible.

That is a great story in that link. When I was in college I thought I knew my way around Unix. One summer I took a job in the computer lab and I think I saw twenty people the whole summer. One day I was bored and decided to type "help *.*.*" at the terminal. Most of the commands I didn't have permission to use, but I learned a lot. I am not sure how far I got before the summer ended.
