Archived threads are not public anymore

    Hi!

    Archived threads like:
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=680594
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=484714
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=409682
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293425

are not public anymore. This is since a few weeks. Could you please make them public again, people are experiencing a lot of dead links from google.

    Yours, Florian

    Yes, we know.
The Archives have been restricted to logged in users because we had complaints that old fixes from old threads were breaking user systems.

This is a good compromise. Indexing bots will eventually forget about the Archive section now they are not allowed to index it. It'll take some time before these threads disappear from searches, they will, eventually.

Sorry you had to register to browse the Archive section. Glad to have you here no matter what

This is definitely a bad decision. Why not let users mark specific (actually outdated) threads as being outdated instead of making a huge amount of useful information (which applies to ubuntu in general), such as all the links I posted. None of them refers to a specific version of Ubuntu.

Especially as the poll http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1721627 clearly shows that users would like to have the archive accessible to the public.

It is not a bad decision, it is a compromise.

As a compromise it is better then the alternates which include deleting the archives (which has been strongly advocated by some) and broken systems (which has resulted from bad or outdated information in the archives).

The archives have been preserved so win for the advocates of old posts.

The archives are not visible to the casual public, thus lessening the impact of outdated information and less broken systems.
There are two mistakes one can make along the road to truth...not going all the way, and not starting.
