I was using enigmail and thunderbird to do gpg encryption, and now that I reinstalled, I cannot get them working to decrypt my messages again.
I have a backup of the home directory, how can I recover my private key?

Just copy .gnupg over to your new home directory.
hmmm. did that, but it didn't seem to find the key. I even reinstalled thunderbird, enigmail, and seahorse.... is there something i still need to do to get the key to be detected by gnupg?
Try opening Thunderbird and clicking on OpenPGP tab then Key Management then File then Import keys From File and navigate to your GPG key file. Double-click it. Any better?
