Hi and welcome to the forums

I am sorry to hear you feel discouraged by your initial ventures into the world of Linux, but hopefully we can rectify this.

What package are you trying to install? Have you got a link to the page?

The more you tell us, the easier it will be to help you.

What are you trying to install? There is a good chance its already in one of the repositories and there would be no need to have to install it from a tar.

I believe Firefox 5 is available as an automatic update on Natty Narwhal:

I'm running 11.04, FF is just an example. In windows an install is very simple in Ubuntu there is more that one way to do it.
I think I am trying to do too much too soon. The install went great all my devices work (except an unsupported TV card).
I think I need to stick with the GUI for now and realise that learning the command line is kind of like learning Mandarin Chinese while someone is shooting at you

    Re: Completely discouraged.

The main thing to remember is..

    Linux is not Windows

You don't surf round tinternet clicking on things to install <-- Which is the standard Windows mindset

And that mindset is why so much Malware / Viruses gain a foothold

You get your programs almost elusively from Linux repositories which are guarded by some serious geek heavies !!

I have upgraded Firefox to version 5 but I certainly didn't unpack a tarball or do a make, make install

    I can't remember how I did it now (I'm getting old !!)
