USPTO Rejects a Number of Oracle’s Patent Claims

The courtroom gloves came off when it was announced that Oracle is seeking quite a few Billion dollars from Google’s bottom line due to Android’s allegedly unlawful use of Java. A long courtroom battle still lays ahead before any value will be assigned to Oracle’s claim by any court.

Now, while this is ongoing, Google requested the USPTO to re-examine the patents asserted by Oracle. This was seen as a desperate move by Google to invalidate them outside the courtroom by many. Well, in fact, this may just have been a great move, which resulted in a rejection of 17 of the patent’s 21 claims.

This has consequently reduced the number of claims Oracle can assert in a court. However, there are still four remaining, as well as the 118 contained in the other six asserted patents, which are also still pending the re-examination process. It will be interesting to see how many of them would survive the process.

Be as it may, Oracle still does have quite a few legal bullets left against Google, and we will keep you updated as things progress.
    hehe

I read on Groklaw that Google had initiated this process. I hadn't checked back to see how it was proceeding.

    Terrific news...

I hope there is plenty more of it to come.
