    Can't connect to internet/network

I brought my computer to the office and i can't connect to the network. All i get when my pc is plugged in is a black box in the top right corner saying Disconnected - you are offline.

IDK if this helps but all the other computers have Windows.
    P.S. i run ubuntu 9.10 (karmic)

Has the PC been on the network before? The corporation for which I work registers MAC addresses - and alarms on "rogue" computers. The IT guys "frown" on connecting non-corporate machines to their network.
Otherwise... Is it a DHCP network - or do machines have assigned (fixed) addresses?

Do you mean, "I plugged a working Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on my computer, then turned the computer on..." I've been in offices where there were Ethernet cables which were not plugged into anything, at either end.

It's almost certainly not relevant to your question, but you are using an unsupported version of Ubuntu.
