I went to http://kernel.org/ and picked the 3.7 kernel. It took a bit more time than I figured because they moved serio.h from: [linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git] / include / linux / serio.h
to: [linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-stable.git] / include / uapi / linux / serio.h

I had to track it down through the includes. A bit of a pain.

Anyway e is still good and the TSC40 ID is still the last one at d: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kerne...7225f5c1fb1c39

And despite you being convinced you've done things correctly you appear to be IDing TSC40 and that seems to be the problem. You can see where the names you are getting are coming from: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kerne...7225f5c1fb1c39

So we need to go over the instructions for changing the ID from d to e. Take a quick peek at the ones on the updated Serial Graphic Tablet HOW TO. Maybe I wrote them a little clearer?

I don't know what to say. I did what I thought I did last time - I thought I did EXACTLY the same. I downloaded it to a different directory and did a clean build. I guess that only difference is this time I built everything as root. Lo and behold !! It shows up as I launch inputattach!

I feel so embarrassed. Sorry to waste your time!!

It however goes bananas - it launches a click even before the tip touches the surface and seem to cause a release when the pen is moved out of surface reach. I am sure it is just configuration and now that it is alive I will go and search in the 51 pages to make it usable.

So, what protocol do I need if I am using a Lenovo Thinkpad x61t?

I noticed that there were some very small differences between Ubuntu and Mint. I am primarily using Debian 6.0 Squeeze. I notice that Debian seems to call it xserver-xorg-input-wacom instead of xf86-input-wacom. Differences? Compatible?


What about Gentoo which I use on a separate hard drive to get more familiar with all the options I have in using linux? Things like this fix + rolling release do not give me warm fuzzies.

Neither of the two serio drivers on this HOW TO apply to a tablet PC. Serial tablet PC's use the ISDv4 protocol. The X driver for that is still built into xf86-input-wacom. Although there is now a serio driver available for ISDV4 in input-wacom called wacom_w8001.ko it is easier to just use the X driver.

And the xserver-xorg-input-wacom package contains xf86-input-wacom. It pretty much is the package now days.

With Mint you are not getting frequent kernel updates. With Ubuntu you might be and with a rolling release like Gentoo you would be. In that case you'd want to consider setting up a kernel module if you had one as a dkms. The Linux Wacom HOW TO shows how to do that for wacom.ko in the appendix. But you don't have to worry about that because ISDV4 doesn't need a kernel module.

What kernel is Ubuntu using nowadays?
In Gentoo, my kernel is 3.6.XX but I think I had some configuration issues going on so even if it is in the newer kernel, I don't have it set up right.

This thread really isn't the appropriate one to set up a ISDv4 on. A new thread would be better.

That said let's find out your kernel and X Server version. Debian, correct?

If X Server 1.7 then HAL or more likely X Server 1.8 or later and xorg.conf.d. Either way it does sound like it might be a configuration issue. So we'd be checking either the Wacom .fdi file or the .conf file.

My point was with a ISDv4 serial device you do not need a kernel driver. Just a X driver.
