I use it all the time for MS Doc files at college. No issues.

canon tends to not take their linux market in the us seriously. They atleast support other operating systems in other countries. Try to download from their european branch next time

    download debian based

I've used Libre Office files with Office 2010. However there were some compatibility issues with formatting. But nothing serious - the words at least will be there, which I guess is the important thing.

No open source word processor is good at mimicing the advanced formatting found in Word.

I don't want to throw a wrench into this but my daughter college requires her to use MS Office. Why I don't understand because libre office and open office are both compatible with MS Office. So check with your school first.

True, but Libre's not too bad.
