Safe to shutdown pc while upgrading distro?

While I was upgrading the distro my cursor got stuck between two screens(problem can be found here). The uprading manager is minimized so I can't see the process of the upgrade or do anything. Would it be safe to shutdown the computer?

    No.

    VERY NO!

You should at least wait an hour or two (Go do something else.) then look to see if the power button in the top right is flashing red.
Life is an extraordinarily long concatenation of luck and coincidence.

    Too late
Seems that the whole computer just froze as I noticed that some gnome widgets froze. Only thing happening on the whole desktop was the cursor flickering between screens.
So I restarted and now I can't start the computer.
    I get:
    Code:
Kernel panic -not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0, 0)
and some more I guess this is unfixable.. Is at least my home directory etc. intact?
