One talks about Sun planning to realease the Source Code for java, the toerh only says that Suns plans to change their liscence (but not offer the code...)

they already have source code released under two different licences. the one about changing the license seems more correct to me.

Another funny license. My favorite part:

When Sun says they'll "open source" Java, I assume it means they'll come up with another new, ridiculous license, that will in the Debian sense still keep Java in non-free, just as it currently is.

someone on the firefox forums once suggested i disable java. he said i would get faster response from firefox if i did and he appeared to be correct. i've seen some other negative comments on java here, as well. does it have infamous problems?

it doesn't have infamous problems, people do consider java to be slow, but to be perfectly honest, its as fast as c++ these days.
Those that state otherwise don't know what they are talking about.
All langs have ups and dones.
    here are some benchmarks.

Web page embedded Java is just a small portion of Java's uses. In that roll it is used primarily for advertisement, which is the reason I disable it on any browser.

    Question Re: Java Open Sourced

Does this mean we'll see Ubuntu bundled with a tested and certified Runtime Environment and browser plug-ins in the future or possibly the availability of those in the repositories? That would surely appeal to a lot of newbies (there are plenty of sites out there with built-in java functionality). Not that installing java would be so difficult in it's current state... but apt-get jre java-firefox sounds pretty sweet.
    Eternally confused.
