    I'm really tempted to hijack this as a discussion thread, for several reasons. We really do have a screenshots thread, where you can see quite a few panels. I'm pulling my image from over there.



    I don't understand the purpose of panel applets, really. To me, fewer is better, because they're only meant to handle little systemy things with the smallest pixel cost possible; I think the tablet OSs have the right idea. Too many things up there, and you start to misplace the ones you actually might need quick access to. Feedback on system resources, the weather, and so on seem to me better left to Conkies. But I guess there's no qualitative difference between a clock and a weather applet I could really point to.

    What do the RSS and desktop applets do?
