Video Transcoding / Network Issue
I frequently need to transcode videos and I have tried a variety of programs, including Winff, Arista and Handbrake. Every time I transcode something longer than 4 or 5 minutes, my machine locks up.
It does not matter what the file type is, what I recompress it to or on which of the drives I read from/write to.
The last two times I tried converting and my machine locked, I noticed something odd: the lockup took out my LAN switch, knocking my other machines offline. I could not get back online until I restarted my locked up machine. It only took out the switch, not my cable modem further upline.
How could converting video in any way affect the network?
I am running 11.04 64 bit on a dual Athlon box, 8G ram, NVIDIA card. 2.6.38-8 Kernel, Gnome 2.32.1.
I have had this problem the last couple of Ubuntu releases but never noticed the network issue until recently. It could have been happening before but network configuration is new.
