    Question Hidden/Invisible Folders

I have a feeling I'm being an utter noob so bear with me.

Several times in my usage of ubuntu I have come across the problem that i should have a file and I should create one if I don't. The problem then arises that I can't name it correctly because allegedly, the folder already exists. What's going on?!?

I installed Ubuntu on my laptop, and I am the only user, so I assume I'm whatever Ubuntu has in the way of admins...

I am vaguely familiar with the concept of hidden files, but- how do I unhide them?!? It's quite frustrating. Quite recently, in fact, I created a folder, redirected the File Manager to another location, but when I came back my folder was hidden. The name started with a ".", if that helps...

Yeah. If you are in Nautilus (file manager), hit CTRL-H to see hidden files/folders.

Or menu View -> Show hidden...

Names that start with a dot are hidden.

Yet another way if you are in a terminal and not in Nautilus (your file manager) is to use the -a switch for ls

    Code:
    ls -a
to list all contents of your working directory

Load Nautilus Preferences and set display hidden there. Then you don't have to remember to ctrl-h each time you open nautilus.

I wish my computer would do what I wanted it to do instead of what I told it to do.

    Thanks guys!

I tried the properties menu but I couldn't find anything like that...

The reason I didn't try the View menu is because I've never maximised it XP kinda fail.
