Ok, I tried this with a NVidia GeForce FX 5200, and the acceleration works great, but the graphics don't work very well. For example, running 'nonXgl glxgears' looks like the attached screenshot...

Maybe on 5.10, but on my 6.06 the first time I called visudo it used vi. However, after loading nano for some completely unrelated task it seems to have made itself the default such that the next call to visudo used nano. I found that somewhat irksome, as I prefer vim to nano, but it's the truth! To be safe, the export visual command should be called... though I trust few people will be confused should they indeed be presented with vi.

I've been using this method for weeks now on a Mobility Radeon 9600.

    Sounds interesting.

Does it work for videoplayers and resizeable windows, too?

Got time to test it now...

    Yes, tested it with kaffeine.

    Yes and no:
In Kaffeine I could switch to fullscreen mode; which worked. But normal resizing wasn't possible because of missing windowborders.
I also couldn't move that window, not even with ALT+Leftclick+Move_mouse

Also, I wasn't able to put this screen in the background, it's always in front of all other windows.

Worst of all, my keyboard didn't worked after starting nonXgl. Only CTRL+ALT+x Combinations worked (and so I could shutdown that server....), but no normal keys.

So I'll stay with starting Xorg and Xgl parallel at the same time, it's far more flexible for me.

Just wanted to add a Me Too! to this thread, these scripts rock! Working perfectly on the latest Nvidia drivers from repos.
