No.
The above post definitely does not contain any sarcasm at all.
That won't be possible until 11.10.
I have install Unity 2D and I have to log out and log in to select Unity and vice versa. Haven't try it in 11.04 but I believe it is the same.
Ok,so how do I remove unity and install Gnome 3?

Possible if you want to run Gnome 2 too.
If you have accelerated graphics, GNOME 3 will work. Otherwise not much point to an upgrade.
I'd wait for 11.10 if you have your heart set on trying gnome on ubuntu. The repo is very buggy and may or may not work at all.

GNOME hasn't made a 2D version of its shell. Every other dock can run with the Metacity compositing engine, even computers with weak processors.
Actually it is possible to have GNOME 3 alongside Unity through JHBuild. What it does is builds and installs Gnome Shell from Git in your home folder so that it doesn't screw up your system.
Instructions are here.
And yes, there is a 2D fallback for GS, it's the GNOME 3 desktop sans GNOME Shell. It largely resembles the classic GNOME 2 desktop, except it's not, and it's rather ugly, though.
