There was a Compiz plugin to make the desktop looks 3d with the glasses (not just the icons) but it is not supported in 11.04.

Compiz already has a 3D plugin that can take all of the elements of your desktop in layers and make them 3D in perspective to the OpenGL environment. I'd encourage you to get involved with that and make it a bit better- it works with headtracking and glasses separately, I believe.
Of course, no one's stopping you, but it may look odd to have just one part of the GUI 3D.
