Yeah, if you're going for your own personal installation go ahead & grab the smxi script which simplifies Debian a great deal, but it's not fancy gui.

You can google it but if you want a headstart:
    Code:
    cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/smxi.zip && unzip smxi.zip && smxi
You're probably safe to use the script & add liquorix for a distro but if you go that route don't remove the extra video modules. You'll figure it out when you run it.

ok will run the script and see what it does .... thanks for the head start on things ....

helps when someone has done the leg work before hand and knows some of the pitfalls.

Will see if I can make it work ..... but probably be tomorrow now .... just getting light here
and at some point I need to sleep ....

Yeah, we all need sleep occasionally.

I might just try & retrace my steps with a distro in mind and see what I can come up with. Need to see if I can reproduce my results from scratch.

Often works out better second time around ... as you know what to avoid .....

    I hope you succeed ......

not sure whats going on here its unpacking yet more packages ....
seems to unpack so many then install them ..... then starts again ...
well once this is finished .... will get a few hours shut eye .

Its just generating the grub now ,,,, so cannot be far off ....

will post the results of the re-boot before I nod off ....

Its setting up mono now .... already set grub up twice already too ...
I hope its not looping ....

Night Keith. I'm starting with the Xfce version of Debian Mint this time around. I think xfce 4.8 is gtk-3.0 based, but it's a fresher iso so hopefully it will eliminate a lot of downloading.

Ok night ,,,, 6:38 AM here .... lols .... went all the way through again ....

keep plugging away .... ok its just finished ,,,,

Wow completed with 0 updates more to do ..... reboot now time to see

Well it booted ..... through the login to a totally blue screen ,,,,

failed to load session classic gnome ,,,,, so back to the drawing board

I too will start again later on ......

E17 loaded and all the applications work ,,,,,

    added xorg.conf .... now .....
its stopping on battery manager .... after re-boot
and its a desktop machine .... this I have seen its related to lightdm
    and can be fixed .....

    startx ....
is saying that the Nvidia driver module did not load and I have had that
    before too .....

So will fix it later on .... as all packages are up to date and the only thing

I hope that's what it is stopping this is the graphics driver not loading up .....

Well another day and another bucked full of problems to solve ...

I carried on with this and we have a success

MINT 11.10 GNOME-SHELL is up and running with a hint of debian too ..... 4 small packages - may remove these
later if they cause me any problems

    Gnome Shell version 3.1.4

running it from LXDE at the moment ...... so still a problem ...... canberra-gtk is not loading
not sure why yet ...... but this is good fun ..... and only using 496 Meg with firefox open
    and the System monitor .......

and it runs with KDE too .... added ricotz testing again to do this though .....
I only install the minimal in extensions ...... from the ricotz testing

( reason - if I were to add any it would be from here .... gnatty pack as they are more stable )

    Plus clutter mutter etc .....

I then remove -ie untick the ricotz ppa in synaptic repositories - once I have the latest versions installed

    ---------------------

Also burned a new Linux Mint 64 bit to try the debian mix out with ... maybe later on tonight as I am still
setting the 32 bit one up .... and its good KDE and Gnome shell on my celeron 3100 with 512 meg memory
and its still reasonably fast ...... I am impressed ..... still takes a while to initially load in to it ...
but once it is in it is good ....

I think xfce 4.8 is gtk-3.0 based, but it's a fresher iso so hopefully it will eliminate a lot of downloading.
That's a good idea .... I might download it tonight .... will see this is getting interesting now .....
starting as a USER defined session I can get Gnome-Shell to run perfectly now ....

looking good ..... might try a remastersys of it too .... squashfs is needed .....

    Mogwai (aka Linux Mint Sid)

Link to thread discussing Mogwai (aka Linux Mint Sid)

Since Keith & I are playing with this I thought it best to create a thread for it.
