Chuck
I remembered of an old good friend called web history, and finally found it...... http://raphaelhertzog.com/2011/04/18...-experimental/
Hope it'll work.
This is the 32 bit version ....... was after the updates the other day .....
Thanks for checking it though ..... in the 64 bit .....
Thing is its not letting me change the settings .....
Ok nice one Phil
Why do I see all applications twice in the shell? The package menu-xdg generates a desktop file from the Debian menu information, those are in a menu entry that is hidden by default in the old GNOME menu. Gnome Shell doesn’t respect those settings and displays all .desktop files. Remove menu-xdg and you will get a cleaner list of applications.

Weirdness. I wonder if the bug was just introduced in the 32-bit? Even stranger that it won't allow you to change them, maybe not, just tried to change mine & they must be hard coded.
If you feel adventurous I suppose you could go into synaptic and see if you can force an earlier version of something.. ? I don't know what, maybe system-settings or control-center, if the option exists.

Funny, I just checked Synaptic and menu-xdg isn't installed on this one.
I did have a dupe that I got rid of using alacarte, some apps have multiple entries. In my case I had duplicate Desktop Webmail because there was an entry in "other" and "internet", I just toggled off the one in "other".

I just looked at the software sources list...eek!
Just worth mentioning, boot-up to desktop is the fastest I've ever had (about 25s). Maybe due to ext4 and/or clean install. By comparison, my old 9.04>>>11.04 partition on ext3 takes about 1.5 mins, whereas my recently deleted and not-at-all-missed Vista partition would take about 3 mins (when it decided to work).
Well that sources.list probably has a couple things you don't want & can purge if you don't want to use them. I think I loaded the one you're using with AWN, xfce4-panel & I don't remember what all else. Things I find useful but others might not.
For instance, I'm lost without Synapse on an desktop anymore so it's usually one of the first things I install.
Other than that did you kill off the bugs you ran into?
Oh, been awhile since I had a clean install of the version you & I are using but noticed that a fresh desktop with nothing running on the 32-bit version uses only 165Mb of RAM. That's a pretty small footprint.
Chuck
Me too with vista .... would go in after 3 mins then install updates and tell you you had to restart your machine .... and then it did not always like its own updates ..... I do not miss it one bit ....
As soon as kdm - Gnome-Shell boots in .... I am away and working .... love it ....
Just done a full upgrade again today ...... all is still working fine as far as I can tell ....
