    Question Problem with speakers and headphones Ubuntu 11.04

    I'm having problems with my sound, and it seems as if I'm not the only one. When using Ubuntu, (I have it dual-installed with Vista) and trying to listen to music on headphones, the internal speakers don't mute when I plug my headphones in. I am using a Compaq Presario CQ5112F desktop PC. When I looked at the sound card, it said Realtek High Definition Speakers, and the driver name is RTKVHDA.sys , but I don't know it any of that helps. I would really just like to know how to mute the speakers only when the headphones are plugged in. Thanks.

    You're fired! Oops, sorry, I was channeling Donald Trump

    Use the alsa-info-script to provide detailed information.
    Run this command in a terminal:
    Code:
    wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
    Choose the upload option and provide a link for the output.

    @biano
    You need to find the correct model switch for your pin configuration.Using a Terminal="Applications->Accessories->Terminal"
    Open this file for editing:
    Code:
     gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    Insert this line at the bottom:
    Code:
     options snd-hda-intel model=
    Save. Close. Reboot.
    Check your levels in alsamixer.
    Code:
     alsamixer
    After the = you will add one of these model names (left column):
    Code:
    ALC882/883/885/888/889

    Your codec is ALC888. No space between the = and model name.
    Reload alsa after each change and only one at a time please.
    Code:
    sudo alsa force-reload
    EDIT: for others use this command to find your codec:
    For intel HDA
    Code:
    head -n 1 /proc/asound/card*/codec#*
    For AC'97:
    Code:
    head -1 /proc/asound/card0/codec97#0/ac97#0-0
    To find the model options for your codec:
    Code:
    zless /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz

    I am also having this sound issue, on a ASUS k50IJ notebook computer. What course of action should I pursue?

    @JasonGriffee
    Use the procedure I posted above. For your machine:
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=auto
    @thuci
    For yours:
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=thinkpad

    Another megathread?
    I love megathreads, especially when there's about 10 people without avatars/sigs and they don't provide any or useless information.
    Warning: I sometimes lack patience. Don't take it personally.
