I have a similar problem to rowico but the solution provided by chili555 does not work for me. One difference is that the code
    rfkill list all
reveals that Yes is the condition for Hard Blocked

Not sure how to þroceed Would welcome advice

Do you solemnly swear on my C/C++ Programmers Bible that the hardware switch on your laptop is set to 'ON?' What kind of laptop is it? May we see:
    Code:
    lsmod

    Hi,
I got the same problem here (Dell 1525 N Laptop with Intel 3945ABG wifi card) but adding iwl3945 to the file modules doesn't help

Here is the output of some commands:
    Code:
    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$ rfkill list all

        Soft blocked: no
        Hard blocked: no

    Code:

Unfortunately, it doesn't seems to be valid....

    Code:
    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$ dmesg -e iwl -e wlan
    dmesg : option invalide -- 'e'
    Usage: dmesg [-c] [-n level] [-r] [-s bufsize]

Well, I'm sorry. I made a slight error. Please post:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep -e iwl -e wlan
"Oh, Ubuntu, you are my favorite Linux-based operating system" --Dr. Sheldon Cooper, Ph.D., Sc.D.

Re: new to ubuntu wireless troubles with Intel 3945ABG

    It's better
    Code:
    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$ dmesg | grep -e iwl -e wlan
    [ 22.195798] iwl3945: Unknown parameter `#'
    [ 23.473286] iwl3945: Unknown parameter `#'

Re: new to ubuntu wireless troubles with Intel 3945ABG

    iwl3945: Unknown parameter `#'
There ought to be way more than that:
    Code:
    dmesg | grep iwl
    ls /etc/modprobe.d
That's a message I have never seen before, frankly.

Re: new to ubuntu wireless troubles with Intel 3945ABG

I am sorry, I have already tried quit a lot of solutions and I am afraid that my installation is now quite a mess. If you think it would be simplier to restart from a fresh install, don't hesitate to tell me, I will try to do it in the week.

    Then, to answer your question:
    Code:
    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$ dmesg | grep iwl
    [ 25.859522] iwl3945: Unknown parameter `#'
    [ 27.345339] iwl3945: Unknown parameter `#'

    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$ ls /etc/modprobe.d
    alsa-base.conf blacklist-framebuffer.conf blacklist-watchdog.conf
    blacklist-ath_pci.conf blacklist-modem.conf iwl3945.conf
    blacklist.conf blacklist-oss.conf libpisock9.conf
    blacklist-firewire.conf blacklist-rare-network.conf
    vincent@Dell-Inspiron:~$
Note that iwl3945.conf is a file created by myself following some obscurs instruction that I don't remenber and that contain this line:
    alias wlan0 iwl3945
    options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1 # <-- enables software scanning

Re: new to ubuntu wireless troubles with Intel 3945ABG

    Please amend it to:
    Code:
    alias wlan0 iwl3945
    options iwl3945 disable_hw_scan=1
    Then do:
    Code:
    sudo rmmod -f iwl3945
    sudo modprobe iwl3945
    Any improvement?

Let's see if we can't fix it first.
