    I use 2.6.32.33 - 10.04 ubuntu - updated till last one hour.

    Getting resolution of 1024 x 1280 but need 1600 x 900 or something similar.

The ubuntu kernel devs ppa (lucid section) has a natty-backport-kernel package.

Don't know the impact this will have on the xorg-edgers intel driver (lucid).

The launchpad ppa is up but it looks like the packages are gone..or does this mean building in progress ?

The last kernel build for lucid 2.6.38-8.42 was in April.
    https://launchpad.net/~kernel-ppa/+a...+build/2403768

The UbuntuUpdates kernel backports have been removed/deleted.

Must be the beginning of the end for 10.04.

So,if anyone still is interested in intel/sandybridge for 10.04.use glasen's patched intel drivers:

    Code:
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:glasen/intel-driver
    sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kernel-ppa/ppa
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade
    sudo apt-get install linux-image-generic-lts-backport-natty linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-natty
    reboot

    source glasen's blog (german)
All credits go to Stefan Glasenhardt.
..he enjoys getting postcards from all around the world btw.

That should fix resolution/modesetting issues, but isn't a newer mesa (than the one found in Lucid repo) required for 3D accel/Compiz? I'm also thinking that a newer libva wold be required to get all of the video accel goodness of Sandy Bridge.

Really, Sandy Bridge owners should run at least 11.04. 11.10 is better if user likes Unity/Gnome Shell or non-GNOME DE. Even then, using xorg-edgers is necessary to get the most out of the GPU.

Where is the difference for the intel GPU performance when running backported drivers ,mesa, aso and the latest kernel ?

IDK, I'm not a fan of backporting. I'd rather just build from source.

I'm currently doing the same thing, the solution in realzippy's post works for me. Found it on a blog though.

I'm currently trying to upgrade mesa to 7.11 (Sandybridge improvements) here:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1840081

If somebody can help me there use their help to upgrade! It's worth it!
