Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

This isn't good. Did an upgrade, graphic performance went down the tubes, and I'm stuck at 1024x768. It's a 1920x1200 monitor...

Do you think the next upgrade will fix it?

I reinstalled the nvidia drivers, tried a higher version (304->310), the "updates" versions, no dice. I was never able to install drivers from "Software & Updates" to begin with, but that's a different story. I got by using tty console, and guessing package names. It was working fine for awhile.

    Video adapter:
    Code:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK106 [GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device 3657
        Subsystem: eVga.com. Corp. Device 3657

Edit: looks like I'm back in business. Followed nvidia steps in OP, I think specifically it was the nvidia-xconfig command that fixed my problem but idk. Guess there was something wrong with my xorg config. Now it looks like I'm using the plain oss drivers, which is fine by me.

Following the instructions in the first and links in the second posts for NVidia Cards... Even though it is "Apple/MAC" The main machine specific part of it is modulized in the Linux kernel... so other graphics specifics modules and layers work basically the same on top of that, making it appear "universal." So a graphics method for a Linux or UNIX x86 is the same for an ARM, MAC, Other Arch, Phone, other mechanically specific device, etc... Is basically the same on the upper layers.

Having said that- Use "nomodeset" as a boot option until you can install an NVidia Graphics driver, either via "Additional Drivers" or manually using the instructions referred to through Post 1 or Post 2.

If that doesn't work, then I've found a way to hardcode force the grub menu to show it's darn face. Here are the instructions:

    - Boot from a LiveCD. (Only required if your sys is unbootable)
After the shift key thing failed, I tried booting from a live usb stick, but it didn't work (already set the machine to boot from the usb stick). Would a live CD make a difference?

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

saw I had an update today so I updated before I was going to go to bed. there were updates involving nvidia and a Linux kernel. everything seemed fine. it said to restart so I did. booted up to a black screen with a lot of white text talking about stuff starting and stopping. it sat there for awhile so I powered off and turned back on. now when I boot every time it gets to the purple Ubuntu loading screen and then goes to a black screen with a cursor in the top left corner. holding shift does not open grub. f10 opens some kind of prompt for my password but its like my keyboard doesn't work when I try to type it in. any help here would be greatly appreciated as I have a lot of work on this computer. it is an Asus et2411.

edit: turns out I needed to also press ESC while holding shift to open grub. I'm in grub but not sure what to do next.

edit 2: here is what comes up when I remove quiet splash from the kernal boot: http://imgur.com/CYJvCxx

it just sits there once it gets that far.

edit 3: started an old kernel and it brought up ttyl. typed in startx and it said FATAL: Module nvidia_304_updates not found. at one point. I'm guessing this is the issue.

edit 4: It seems the nVidia drivers that were installed during the update could have been in the problem. I purged nvidia* and then everthing worked fine. I used apt-get to install the current drivers, but I'm not sure if they are the right ones at this pont.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

    Cheers mates!
I finally managed to get my Asrock ITX2700 board with Intel PowerVR SGX545 (using DVI as output source) showing text instead of black screen with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS Server with this:

sudo pico /etc/default/grub (use pico or what ever editor you like)

edited line to look like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=" quiet nomodeset video=LVDS-1:d "
    saved it (crtl + x, y)
    and ran:
    sudo update-grub
    sudo reboot now

ps. Do not use video=LVDS-1:d -option if you are using laptop, it will disable laptop's own screen.

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

Laptop specs: Sony Vaio SVE1712Z1EB (Radeon HD7650M).

Today I've tried again Ubuntu 13.04, and doesn't start like Ubuntu 12.04(02). Ubuntu 13.04 shows a full violet screen.
I've tried to add nomodeset on kernel, and remove quiet and splash, and this is the error:

init: lightdm main process (2023) terminated with status 1
init: failsafe-x main process (2911) terminated with status 1
    Solutions?

Re: Graphics Resolution- Upgrade /Blank Screen after reboot

Last weekend I decided to upgrade my AMD64 system from 12:04 to 13.04
I managed to do all the 12.10 procedure online but on reboot I have a blank screen with backlight on.
    Following the procedures here:
    - I can boot to a command prompt -
    - I can run fine from my old 12.04 live usb (don't have a 12.10 live usb)
    - The monitor is ACER P203W (1680 x 1050)

    Running tests
    Code:
lspci -vnn | grep -i VGA
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300] : Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    and /var/log/Xorg.0.log gives
