// Draft document on reading Xorg Logs //
Deciphering The Xorg Log File.
Ever wonder why I ask for Xorg Log files on this thread and in the Forum? Why would anyone want to read /var/log/Xorg.0.log and be able to understand it? Self-torture or a tool?
If there is something wrong graphically or you want do something with the XSession., all the information is there.
Example file:

(++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
This is the header of the log file. The usable info contained in this header is the XServer version(lines 1-4), the current operating system (line 6) and the kernel boot line (line 7).
Code:

[ 28.950] (==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
Here you see it "is" using a configuration file and where it is located. If it isn't using a config file, it will go directly to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d, probe hardware and try to create a default configuration based on the data returned.

Here it shows if valid EDID data is return by a display or TV and what ports they are found on. There will also be refresh rates. This is a little cryptic for some. What is a problem here is if there is no EDID data returned. Without that you have to declared a refresh range if it is different than what is normal and may have to declare custom modelines.

This is from a log on the same box, after a normal system update.... all of a sudden on reboot, X would not start. Uninstall and reinstall of the driver brought it back up... (compiling against the current kernel)

I'm posting this from "my" laptop, connected to an external monitor so you can see a different Xorg.O.log file. Yes this one has an Intel GPU... Notice the EDID data retruned, we'll work with that later.

I have to stop for now.
To Do List:
- show EDID Data in the xorg log and how to test it as valid, convert that to a local edid.bin file
- show modelines computed by VESA
- show a log without a driver or config and failures.
- etc. (blah/tired)
