In the 290.10 version of the Nvidia driver bin file, the setup is different, there is no '/usr/src/nv' path.

After testing some tarring out, your command

tar -cf blah.tar foldername

will do what you wish. A few notes: use ./foldername, and use the flags -cvf instead of -cf to see some pretty and reassuring output. If you want you could also compress it, perhaps by calling it blah.lzma (or blah.tar.lzma, not sure).

I can't speak for the rest of the instructions, just some drive-by help here. Also you write that you use tar man; isn't it man tar? Random tip, pipe man tar to less using man tar | less, makes man pages easier to read.

This thread evolved into the the graphics catchall. Even though, when something thought to be, turn out not to be graphics related, well it still gets taken care of here.

- You say if get to the Grub Menu, then continues to where?
- Does it have any messages before it breaks?
You said "missing kernel," which is sometimes a Grub Message where it can't find the linux kernel... Or XServer when it can't find the kernel driver (such as nvidia.so).
-Does it boot into a desktop if you use these instructions and use nomodeset instead of xforcevesa

Tried 'xforcevesa' in the boot options, downloaded the Boot Repair utility, and it at least shows some love now, I'm finally into Ubuntu graphical interface

I installed the "additional drivers", and tried modprobing them, sudo modprobe nvidia-current and sudo modprobe-nvidia, and it says "Error inserting...no such device" error message

I am a bit puzzled by your second sentence, as the whole idea is to compress the folder back to the state it was in originally before editing it.

That's because nvidia-current is the package... nvidia is the module.

That creates a file in udev to load the nvidia module via udev (earlier than modprobe), turns off and prevents nouveau from loading when modprobe.d loads (same method used by the nvidia binary driver installer) and adds it to the initial boot ram disk.

Yes... and about recompressing... I and all those others referenced executed the uncompressed code. We didn't re-compress it. After the edits, You don't run the original .run file, you change to the extraction directory, chroot the nvidia-installer file (to executable) and run it.

I Ran Update Manager, Now I get a Blank Screen

Does that seem all too familiar? If so read on...

Sometimes a kernel change can cause problems with packages that where installed/compiled against an earlier kernel. Graphics Drivers seem to be real sensitive to this. Usually uninstalling the driver package, then (re)installing them... lets them recompile against the newer kernel. Older kernels will still work with them as the newer kernel usually has new capabilities in them, but still has regression (or backward compatibility) built in.

Always try to remove drivers before reinstalling. If you don't add that step in, it either says you already have the current package or some people end up with both old and new pieces of a driver that conflict with each other or don't work together.

Here it shows if valid EDID data is return by a display or TV and what ports they are found on. There will also be refresh rates. This is a little cryptic for some. What is a problem here is if there is no EDID data returned. Without that you have to declared a refresh range if it is different than what is normal and may have to declare custom modelines.
