Phonon test plays but Amarok does not

Amarok, which worked for me a few days ago, works no longer. I cannot get any sound out of it, either from streams or from ogg files. Yet if I go to the Phonon settings within Amarok, the test sound plays just fine. I can also play sounds in Audacity. How can I restore the Amarok sound?

    The sound came back

The Amarok sound just came back as mysteriously as it disappeared, Just before that, I plugged my Clip player into the USB port -- which should have no relevance at all. I also saw a message to the effect that the HDA Intel device in analog mode did not work, and KDE was dropping back to default. (The message did not stay up long enough for me to transcribe it.)

There are so many pieces to the sound puzzle that it's hard to know which one is responsible when something goes wrong. Pulseaudio, amarok, audacity, phonon, the underlying codecs -- any one of them could be responsible.
