Compiz is a compositing window manager,
Which for some reason you cant run.

Awn requires compositing to display the effects.

You need to turn on compositing in metacity for awn to display properly
when running metacity as the window manager.

metacity -c turned on compositing for metacity.

Edit You mean compiz is now working also??

Wow, thanks. That worked for me too! Everything was working fine on my laptop when I was using 10.10, but upgrading to 11.04 pretty much fracked up my settings when Unity tried to take over; took a while just to get AWN up and running again, and when it finally did, I had white backgrounds behind all docks (was, and still am using ppa; effects seemed fine though). metacity -c did the trick.
