Post Help with new Ubuntu-based distro

Hello everyone at the Ubuntu community,

My name is Jorge Fernandez, I currently work at a Honduran company which specializes in Servers, Firewalls, Network Security and Telemedicine. So we are working in a Ubuntu-based distro (10.04) and we have added some opensource programs which are DCM4CHEE and Care2x as well as Apache2, PHP5 and MySQL. The goal of the OS is to make a full distro with a PACS Server to save the radiological images(DCM4CHEE) and Care2x as the administrative part of hospitals.

The point of all of this is to provide to small clinics and hospitals and opensource operating system ready to handle the DICOM images and administrative stuff. So we have some questions more certainly about legal stuff especially with Canonical. We are 100% in favor of using opensource programs and it will be free for anyone, the question is, is it legal to distribute it as it is a Ubuntu based distro? We are going to provide every opensource program's license as well as Ubuntu's license. I hope you guys could help me with the answer or point me to the right direction. Thanks!

    Thank you.

it would be best to ask Cannonical about the legals stuff (these are community forums).

however there are plenty of Ubuntu based distros. I think that if you modified it you can't really call it and distribute it as Ubuntu but you could call it Honbuntu for example. As you can see there are plenty of Ubuntu based ditros already (check out the distrowatch website to find plenty of them). On of more popular is Linux Mint, but there are also some others like Zorin OS, PearOS, Ultimate Edition, Pinguy OS or more specialist ones such as Clonezilla or Redo backup. None of them really use Ubuntu branding (logos, names) but all of them are quite legal and each has it's own programmes/applications added.

Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?
User friendly disk backup (suitable for older PCs): Redobackup Less friendly disk backup (works on new PC): Clonezilla

    Check with Canonical.

I believe they have a trademark on *buntu, in which case Honbuntu would be a violation.

Don't be surprised if this gets moved to the Cafe, jorgefer00. It's not really a support question.

Thanks for the answers, we are really going to call it DCM-Linux (as DICOM Linux ) we are already preparing the website and everything but we first need to check the legal stuff of course. Thanks!
