I have never had a problem seeing .jpg images in Firefox. Perhaps there is some addon you have that is causing problems. Try creating a new profile for Firefox and see if the problem goes away. Also try running Firefox from the terminal and go to wikipedia and see if there are any error messages displayed when you click on a .jpg image in Firefox.
Are you using the standard Firefox that comes with Ubuntu, or are you using Firefox from a PPA repo or somewhere else?
EDIT: Could your ISP in China possibly be the cause of this?
