Without knowing anything about your machine, this will be very generic. The info above that I quoted is from that link. It is a list of different options for your ALC883 chipset. What you can do is find something in that list closest to your machine and try the following:

    1. Open /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by doing
    Code:
    gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
    2. Add this line to the end of the list and place # in front of the current last line of that file (so it will be ignored)
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=xxxxxx
    3. I used "xxxxxx" because that is what you will replace in that line with each attempt from the quoted info above. For example, if you had an Acer you could start your first try with "options snd-hda-intel model=acer" and try different ones until you get the one that works.

    4. Each time you try one, save the file and restart. If it works, great, if not, move to the next closest. Try them all even if your brand is different than the one listed.

    Good luck!

Re: Realtek ALC883 Sound Card not working

OMG !!! That involves quite some work!

Actually the Realtek ALC883 came onboard with GIGABYTE Mother Board -- Intel Dual Core 2.5 Mhz ..(Socket 775 I -guess not sure)

Can I eliminate the branded ones listed above since mine is an assembled PC?

Re: Realtek ALC883 Sound Card not working

It's not terribly difficult, but yes it takes some time for sure. You could eliminate whatever you want, but you could also find that one that is =dell, for example, may work for yours even though it is not branded. There is also the "auto" option at the end of the list and it's pretty much just trial and error. Sorry I can't give more specific info, but each machine is different and the possibilities are any on that list.

Use the alsa-info-script to provide detailed information.
Run this command in a terminal:
    Code:
    wget http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh -O alsa-info.sh && bash alsa-info.sh
Choose the upload option and provide a link for the output.

Re: Realtek ALC883 Sound Card not working

the card seems to be recognise, but i am not sure why it is disabled. alsda info script should say more on what is happening.

not sure if you know but to run commands you can copy & paste them into the terminal.
Read the easy to understand, lots of pics Ubuntu manual.
Do i need antivirus/firewall in linux?

Re: Realtek ALC883 Sound Card not working

You're running an old version of Ubuntu (8.04) that's about to go EOL. What version was on the LiveCD you tried?

Re: Realtek ALC883 Sound Card not working

I'd advise backing up your data and wiping your old install. Next install lucid or maverick and if no audio then the likely entry in alsa-base.conf:
    Code:
    options snd-hda-intel model=clevo-m540r
