Hi!
Your ram is really low.
Any chance you can add more?
You can try Xubuntu or Lubuntu.

Try CrunchBang Linux, it's Ubuntu based:

If you want ubuntu, i suggest Lubuntu
http://lubuntu.net/
or try Minimal Ubuntu : http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Minimal-Ubuntu-Linux
I have the same machine. I upgraded the memory to 384Mb, which is the maximum possible, I think.
I run Ubuntu 11.04. Unity does not install, just 'classic'. It is solid, but very slow. Only one application at a time, and it is usable, but infuriating. Lubuntu is slightly better, but the hardware is at the limit.

Another thing. I cannot get the Evo to boot from the USB. I have to install Ubuntu from a CD, using the CD reader in the expansion dock. This works, but not everyone will have an expansion dock.

Hi!
You could load via Unetbootin.
No disk or usb needed.

What about Puppy? It's Ubuntu 10.04 based.
