I ended up taking a different approach:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...1&postcount=73

It works, but it's certainly not flawless.

I also mentioned here how I managed to force the "classic look" fallback:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...7&postcount=49

Just remember, if you break it you own it!

    Alt+F2
    Code:
    killall -9 notify-osd
    Alt+F2
    Code:
    r
Note that the second one restarts the Shell. This is handy for things like if you end up playing with JS files, or get some updates to Shell/Mutter/etc. No reboot/relogin necessary.

If you get weird errors with only a single icon appear in the app screen this can usually fix that as well.

What happened to Restart/Shutdown options? Right now I have to log out, then shutdown.

Press the Alt key when the menu is open and "Suspend" magically changes to "Power Off..."!

Now that alt key is not that intuitive - thanks for the hint.

I have gnome-shell from the ppa running for a few days now - I like it.

However there are three issues I'm still having:
    1) No application stores keys in the keyring or it does not get unlocked or used
    2) empathy does not remember my icq account
    3) I'm still having the 'old' nm-applet - not the one like in fedora live cd (minor issue - just beauty)

Re: Gnome3 PPA is getting ready

It's not really supposed to be intuitive (pressing Alt to shut down). Suspend is the default behavior if your computer supports it otherwise you're supposed to:

    A) Log out and shut down.
    or
    B) Press the power button to bring up the shut down menu.

So Alt is really just a shortcut to either of those actions.

Re: Gnome3 PPA is getting ready

Just to check if I've got it right.
If I add aforementioned ppa, upgrade, I get Gnome3 and loose Classic Desktop, as it is now available in Natty?
Also: is ppa now in a state that complete upgrade is available?
I presume that I could use FluxBox, by means of ~/.xsession, without starting Gnome3, as I do now with Gnome2... Am I right?
Gnome3 breaks Unity, I read, but does it break Unity-2d?

Re: Gnome3 PPA is getting ready

That has been the case for both my Natty installs, which I have moved to gnome-shell with. The problems are less now. However, after updates last night I now have to login as "other" but with my normal username and password.
As I understand it, it is necessary to disable autologin before rebooting after updating using the gnome3 ppa.
Please note that although the system is eminently usable, it is not absolutely complete (I think) and obviously, as with Natty, updates could break it! I am taking care when running updates! I use synaptic for that.
(That's why I have 2 Nattys/gnome-shell running at the same time. If one gets broken, I can use the other, but run no updates on that until any problem is fixed).

yes i set up the same way, one for use and one for testing, but i think i will remove unity as its not accessible anyway.
    just loving gnome3

Just checked and my login shows
for my name and then pw
the last upgrade changed it i think!

Re: Gnome3 PPA is getting ready

No one answer my previous question

... What about a CLI install with ALternate CD, add the PPA, and doing a "sudo apt-get install gnome-shell"??

I tried installing gnome-desktop-environment but aptg give me dependencies problems.

Right now Im triying with gnome-shell in a CLI install, Ill report in a while...
