Cool Ubuntu 11.10 will not ship with a classic GNOME Desktop

From our friend Andrew at WebUpD8...
    http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/ubunt...h-classic.html

I recall some people asking recently how long classic gnome would be supported for..
So guys.. here is the answer.. lol

    Apparently Mr.Shuttleworth has called it.
We made very good progress on a11y in Natty, but will miss the goal of perfect a11y. We'll nail it in Oneiric. That's OK, because we have the Classic desktop fallback in Natty, but will not in Oneiric.

So, Would it still be possible to install the classic gnome desktop somehow?

    Bummer.

GNOME desktop as you know it now will be in the Debian repo's for years to come... You've got nothing to worry about. It's not hard to make Debian function the exact same way as Ubuntu.

But even on the newer versions of Ubuntu, it should be possible to compile, package and install gnome 2.x on Ubuntu.

Chances are excellent that Gnome will still be in the Ubuntu repositories for a long time, too, along with stuff like LXDE, Openbox, XFCE4 etc etc. Plenty of choices!
Please, people, remember to BACKUP before you install that new system. Same if you're upgrading.

But would it worth it to downgrade Gnome just to get the panels?

Someone on the forum (i.e rumour) said that Mint is going to ship the panels(no doubt their adaptation) with gnome 3. If this is true the hack would no doubt be available to Ubuntu through a ppa.

Not if Ubuntu upgrades to gnome 3, as it will.

Panels arent even my concern i guess.
as all I use is AWN for the top and bottom anyway..
I just don't want unity or global menu. lol

Maybe one day i warm up to it,
but for now.. my 10.10 is too perfect.
cant imagine anything (unity at least) being better and more efficient than my current setup.

and this whole gnome3 button removal thing is kinda silly.

Re: Ubuntu 11.10 will not ship with a classic GNOME Desktop

I might end up just using Openbox. I've already got an install of it on a netbook.

Anyway, I won't be doing anything much until 12.04 comes out. I prefer to stick with LTS versions.
